Deerfield will be dropping to 2A next year. Although this is the 3A forum, I have to say Coal City in their first year in 2A goes all the way to the finals losing to Washington. Very impressive.

But nothing more impressive than Jake Rundell from OPRF...back just a week after missing state due to bout with MRSA...beating both the state champ at 120 (Ramos 4-0), then beating the 3rd place state finisher, Jaffe from Marmion (3-0)... THEN bumping to 126 in the finals to take on the state champ Ragusin, only losing 3-0. Rundell was my Dual State MVP! What guts... and he's back next year!
That is super impressive. Would've been really something if he'd pulled it off in the last match! Flowrestling took Rundell out of the national rankings after state tournament. Looks pretty dumb in hindsight.

Prior to Montini's two state championships, 3A was dominated by public schools. From 2009 to 2017 the 3A state dual championship was won by public schools. Yes, Montini and Marmion were part of 2A for a few of these years, but public schools like Lockport and OPRF showed they can beat these super private schools during this time period to win IHSA state titles. Not to mention, Sandburg beat St. Rita in 2006 and also beat Montini in 2007 to win state titles.

This said, there are some public schools in the country that can compete against some of the top private schools. This hasn't been the case recently in Illinois because of Montini. Montini has greatly improved their recruiting which has made them one of the best teams in country.
I'm not sure they actually stepped up their recruiting. Who wouldn't want to go wrestle at one of the top schools in the country. Who has one of the best coaches in the country. A great bunch of Assistants. A Nationwide schedule where you can expose yourself for college recruiters. And a school with excellent academics.I think it sells itself.

MC could be favorite. But huge favorite? I think Montini would look forward to that challenge as the underdog.

MONTINI is a team that reloads every year. For me its impossible to say that they cant reload, loosing only four Sr's. Of course three of them are national contenders. I have to assume they qualify at least 8, and have the most placers.

MARMION is another team that can reload well, but can they reload? Going to be tough loosing seven SQ's. I see four returners that will qualify.

OPRF They will lose 5 starters. They should easily Qualify seven next year and a couple toss ups. OPRF will be in the top 5 fight again.

MT CARMEL is only loosing three starters. Top 5 seems obvious. The question is will they send more than 5-6 to state? Maybe their tournament team will struggle. Having a solid line up across the board will help.

DEKALB They have 11 starters returning. I see them qualify at least 9 wrestlers, and placing 5 or more. They need to reload a few top weights and will remain top 5.

HUNTLEY should Qualify at least 7, maybe more. They will lose 4 wrestlers in the top half weighs. Reloading a few big guys and they are in the conversation of top 5. Just depends on how deep the holes are.

EDWARDSVILLE is tough to work out. No reason they wont be an easy top 10. They have 6-7 returners that will qualify. I'm just not sure of their strength vs a top 5 team.

GBN They only return 3 state qualifiers although they are usually a reload team.

LOCKPORT will losse 3 heavy hitters. I don't know how well they reload. No reason they wont be a solid top 10.

LWW will return a solid 8-9 wrestlers. Not sure of the fire power against other top teams.

    SANDBURG will loose 6 starters.
ST CHARLES E they will lose a lot of Sr's also.

I wouldn't sleep on Dekalb. They had a ton of young talent this year.
