Federer VS Tiger - comparisons regarding specialization

New book called "Range" is not about sports but does get into Federer VS Tiger - comparisons regarding specialization. The books thesis is that far more elite athletes had a broad athletic background (like Federer) and not the from cradle specialization exemplified by Tiger Woods. Meaning he is the exception. One thing this may not account for is that you do have to hang with the Jones' enough to make teams in these giant high schools, if not you would lose out. Although the best athletes at those big schools generally can make any team they want. (Exception being where height is an issue perhaps) I read that Russian elite wrestlers generally come from more broad sports spectrum when young. I am sure some kids enter year round wrestling from age 5, this book postulates that you might want to re-think that.
