Illinois advances 13 to Cadet Greco semis

Never mind that Illinois had 9 percent of the total entries in the Cadet National Greco-Roman Tournament at Fargo.

Or that, at 6 p.m., Illinois had more wrestlers still alive in the tournament than 36 states had total entries.

Or that the tournament used the straight-line bracketing method for the first time in its history.

Thirteen semifinalists is still a pretty impressive total.

So is the total of 31 remaining wrestlers Illinois had at the conclusion of Monday’s evening session.

In the semifinals tomorrow morning at 9 a.m.:

Trey Keeley, 88
Peter Ogunsanya, 94
Austin Gomez, 113
Nolan Baker, 120
Austin O’Connor, 126
Logan Gruszka, 145
Randy Meneweather and Jacob Warner, 160
Kamal Bey, 170
George Bessette, 195
Allen Stallings, 220
Bryan Ditchman and Karim Fuentes, 285

Meneweather had the toughest quarterfinal match, having to survive two four-point rethrows to beat Drew Peck of Pennsylvania, 11-8. Meneweather fell behind 4-0, then rallied to lead 6-4 before giving up his second throw to trail 8-6. He picked up a point to trail 8-7 before hitting a four-point bodylock on the edge with 19 seconds left.

Ohio was next with six semifinalists, followed by Wisconsin (five) and Minnesota (four).

Much more tomorrow. For tonight, read trackwrestling and enjoy.
