IHSA Regional Tournament Roundup

By CURT HERRON
Illinois Matmen

While much was made of the fact that Carl Sandburg or Marist would be eliminated from the state dual team series, plenty of other squads were in the same boat on Saturday.

Beside #4 Marist, 17 other schools ranked among the top 15 teams in their classes saw their hopes of advancing in the team competition dashed as the result of scored regionals.

Joining the RedHawks as the biggest omissions from the dual team series are pair of the top three ranked teams in Class 1A, #2 Lena-Winslow/Stockton and #3 Wilmington.

Lena-Winslow/Stockton took second to #1 Dakota at the Dakota Regional while Wilmington, who had made seven straight state trips, was the runner-up to #4 Plano at Seneca.

Top squads like #8 Hononegah and # 9 Libertville (3A), #5 Washington, #7 Rock Island and #10 Oak Forest (2A) and #6 Byron, #8 Coal City and #10 Shelbyville (1A) were eliminated.

The only hope is that one day the IHSA will devise a fairer system where such deserving squads at least get the opportunity to determine their fate in a dual team format.

Here's a closer look at some of the other squads who both advanced in the state series as well as those who saw their dual team hopes dashed in the regional tournaments.

Class 1A

One of the toughest regionals in the state was at Dakota, where five ranked squads competed, including #1 Dakota and #2 Lena-Winslow/Stockton.

The hosts defeated Lena-Winslow/Stockton 213-196 for top honors in a meet that also featured #14 Stillman Valley (131) and #6 Byron (108).

It was a similar story at Seneca, where five ranked teams assembled, including a pair of squads that were ranked third and fourth.

Fourth-ranked Plano edged third-ranked Wilmington 182.5-174 in a meet that also included #11 Herscher (144.5) and #8 Coal City (139.5).

At Unity, which had three ranked teams, #19 Monticello beat #10 Shelbyville 194-175 for top honors while #13 Argenta-Oreana (161.5) was third.

Other top 10 teams who advanced out of their regionals to the dual team sectionals were #5 Mercer County, #7 Harvard and #9 LeRoy.

There were three other regionals in Class 1A that went right down to the wire, including one at Peotone, where the hosts edged Manteno 193-192.5.

At Mt. Carmel, Vandalia defeated Robinson 179-175.5 for the title while at West Frankfort, Murphysboro nipped the hosts by a 162-159 margin.

In two one-sided tournaments, host Harvard beat Aurora Central Catholic 238.5-102.5 and host Lisle defeated Phillips by a 268-130.5 score.

Other regional winners in Class 1A were #12 Gibson City-Melvin Sibley/Fisher, #15 Litchfield, PORTA, Rock Falls and Walther Lutheran.

Class 2A

The biggest upset happened at the Morton Regional, where #13 East Peoria beat #5 Washington 188.5-168.5 in a regional featuring four ranked teams.

In one of the most-anticipated top-10 clashes involving squads in the Quad Cities vicinity, #6 Geneseo defeated #7 host Rock Island 218.5-183.5.

At Tinley Park, #3 Lincoln-Way West beat #10 Oak Forest 250.5-137.5 while at Mahomet-Seymour, #9 Bloomington defeated the #14 hosts by 212-184.

Top-ranked Montini, #2 Sycamore, #4 Yorkville and #8 Crystal Lake Central were other top-10 teams who moved on the the dual team sectionals.

In close regionals with ranked teams, Yorkville edged LaSalle-Peru 172.5-165.5 at Pontiac and #15 Taylorville beat Triad 153-143.5 at Mt. Zion.

Springfield captured the closest tournament in the class, edging Glenwood by a 149.5-144 margin to claim top honors at Springfield Lanphier.

Meanwhile, Montini was involved in the most-lopsided regional, claiming wins in the first 13 finals to defeat host Fenton by a 307-130 margin.

The other squads who won regional championships in the middle class were Amundsen, Antioch, Bowen, Bremen, Cahokia and Riverside-Brookfield.

Class 3A

The top two-team attraction in the largest class was at Marist, where #2 Sandburg rallied to edge #4 Marist 244-238 for top honors.

In a top-10 showdown involving NIC-10 rivals at the Huntley Regional, #7 Harlem defeated #8 Hononegah by a 253-204 margin.

Lockport's regional, which featured three ranked squads, was won by #5 Lincoln-Way Central, who defeated the #14 hosts 177.5-156.

In another regional involving three ranked squads, #11 host Grant claimed a 197-176 advantage over #9 Libertyville for top honors.

The Lake Zurich Regional featured the closest meet in Class 3A. In that competition, Barrington edged Deerfield by a 193-191.5 margin.

Other top 10 squads who advanced as dual teams were #1 Oak Park and River Forest, #3 Marmion Academy, #6 St. Rita and #10 Edwardsville.

OPRF defeated Glenbard East 275.5-165.5 for top honors at York while Marmion beat Downers Grove South 244-119 at Naperville Central.

Other champs were #12 Glenbard North, #13 Hinsdale Central, Barrington, Conant, Minooka, New Trier, Notre Dame and Waubonsie Valley.

Wow! You guys never get things right with anything that is not north of Springfield! For the past 50 years you have tried to ignore the southern area. Edwardsville was a deserving winner, yes! However, some idiot continues to rank Belleville West in the top 15 while other schools have better head to head results and defeat West in a dual. West lost to Granite City in both a dual and also in the tournament. They did not come in second in the Regional. They finished more than 65 points behind in third place! Granite City took second! Why the love for Belleville that causes you people to exaggerate?!

People make mistakes. This site does more for wrestling than any other nationwide in my opinion. You should tone it down and take out the name calling and appreciate all the information you do get here....Read the forum rules!

Appreciate your frustration but lots of ways to look at this. If you actually dig in and check out how much of this site, how much of this forum includes conversation about things south of Springfield, you should then ask: is this a good thing, or do these guys "always get everything wrong"? I continue to believe this site is one of the richest, coolest resources those of us who love wrestling could ever ask for. So yes, maybe there was not quite enough love for GC this year. Take the opportunity to share constructive feedback, make your points...and generally those who rank and respond, pay attention and care about getting it right. I'm just amazed that anyone who loves wrestling could blast this site with such a broad attack. We're lucky to have this place.

Not blasting the site. Just the writer, who is suposed to be a professional, and the ranker, who has a personal bias.

Wow! Really? It was an honest mistake that has been corrected. You look like the idiot coming on here and blasting two individuals that have done so much for the sport of wrestling. I was going to delete your posts but instead I'm going to leave them up as an example to others on how not to handle a situation.

"You guys never get things right with anything that is not north of Springfield..." is a pretty broad brush. I rarely take the time to get defensive but this site, while imperfect (of course) is an incredible resource and worth defending. Moving on, hope you can.

warrior, in my opinion, you should start your own site. that way you can get it exactly how you want it. it obviously doesn't take any effort and practically runs itself. It pays well, offers a 401K, and profit sharing. it gets critical acclaim and all the workers are great celebrity wherever they go.
