New Classes, New Contenders: IHSA Wrestling Realignment For 2026-27

The IHSA wrestling landscape will look a little different in 2026–27, with several notable programs moving between Class 2A and Class 3A.

Among the biggest changes are IC Catholic Prep and St. Ignatius moving up from Class 2A to Class 3A, while Joliet Catholic Academy, Grant, Libertyville, Bradley-Bourbonnais and St. Patrick move down from Class 3A to Class 2A.

The movement creates immediate implications in both classifications, with two strong programs joining an already deep 3A field and several proven teams dropping into what should become a highly competitive 2A state race.

IC Catholic Prep Makes the Jump to 3A

The most notable move may be IC Catholic Prep going from 2A to 3A.

ICCP enters the 2026–27 season as the back-to-back Class 2A team state champion and now gets the opportunity to test itself against the biggest programs in Illinois.

The Knights have quickly developed into one of the strongest programs in the state, assembling a lineup filled with state-level talent while also competing nationally against some of the top programs in the country.

Moving into 3A will create several new potential postseason matchups and add another legitimate program to an already loaded classification.

IC Catholic has never shied away from competition, and the move to 3A should provide plenty of it.
