3A: Marmion claims first title; Dual Team and Individual results

BLOOMINGTON • After several years of trying to push through and claim their first Dual Team State championship, Marmion Academy has reached the top of the heap.  With their 42-31 win over Hononegah in the finals, the celebration started early and, deserving so, has given them the right to be called the state’s best in 3A.

For Hononegah, it was almost a sensational end to what became a wonderful season.  And even though they were one dual win away from their goal, a state championship, their season is one to be celebrated as their state series was not only impressive, but it almost ended as one of the all-time best.

The dual between Marmion and Hononegah opened at 150 pounds with the Cadet’s Zach Stewart starting his team off with a technical fall, followed by an Ashton Hobson fall at 157—Marmion would jump out to a very quick 11-0 lead.

Hononegah, however, would fight back.  In the next four weights, Hononegah would score all bonus-point victories: Max Haskins (165) and Brody Sendele (175) would score major decisions, while Connor Diemel (190) would earn a technical fall, and Kurt Smith (215) would score a disqualification due to an illegal slam.

After six bouts, Hononegah would have a 19-11 lead, but Mamrion would answer in dominant fashion.

Mateusz Nyca (285), Colton Wyller (106), and James Morrison (113) would take the next three weights by fall and add 18 team points to Marmion’s score.  With a 29-19 lead now, and five bouts left, Marmion was slowly sensing their title.

In those final five bouts, the Cadets would pick up three wins from Nicholas Garcia (126), Demetrious Carrera (132), and Grayson Garcia (138), all before forfeiting out at 144 pounds to begin celebrating their title.
