DEKALB • In what turned out to be a loaded field with returning All-Americans and state champions and medalists, the IL/USA Wrestling Freestyle State Championships was an event filled with Illinois’ best wrestlers scrapping it out in their pools and in their cross brackets as each was looking for one of the state’s most prestigious accolades in becoming an Illinois National Team Member.
In the mass of matchups that were on display, not even the largest in-state holiday tournament could have pulled such a collection of talents together for a two-day competition.
The top three wrestlers in each weight automatically qualified for the Illinois National Team, but there remains one additional open allocation to be determined come “Illinois Second Chance.”
Of course, any Illinois wrestler can make his way onto the team this month by placing at any one of the National Regional Championships. In these Regionals, placing any weight class provides a wrestler with the option of choosing which weight he wants to wrestle in Fargo at the National Championships.
