MACHESNEY PARK • With Harlem High School set to host the 36th Annual Al Dvorak Memorial Tournament this Saturday and Sunday, here is a look at the individual weight classes and the wrestlers who will be taking to the mat.

As for the depth of this year’s field, well, there are weights and wrestlers that are just too good to miss.

With weights like 106 pounds, with 11 raked wrestlers, as well as a loaded 126-pound bracket that features 18 total wrestlers who are either ranked or Honorable Mention, there will be matchups all over the gymnasium and field house floors from the first to the final whistle that should spark the interest of even the most novice fan.

This year’s field consists of 40 teams, 38 from Illinois and two from Wisconsin, each of the two Wisconsin teams wrestle in the Division 1 classification.  In the total collection of programs, 103 wrestlers are ranked in the top ten of their school’s classification, and 55 wrestlers are mentioned in the rankings as ten-plus or Honorable Mention.  That means that the overall field will contain 158 wrestlers who are having a solid season heading into the Dvorak.

This should make for an exciting two days of wrestling this weekend in Machesney Park.

Here is a list of the teams in this year’s Dvorak:

Belleville East • Belvidere North • Bolingbrook • Conant • Crystal Lake Central • Dakota • Edwardsville • Freeport • Fremd • Glenbard North • Harlem • Hersey • Hononegah • Huntley • IC Catholic Prep • Joliet West • Libertyville • Lincoln-Way Central • Lincoln-Way East • Lockport • Loyola Academy • Marian Central Catholic • Marshfield, WI • McHenry • Milton, WI • Moline • Montini Catholic • Niles Notre Dame • Normal Community • Plainfield North • Plainfield South • Prairie Ridge • Providence Catholic • Round Lake • Schaumburg • St. Charles East • St. Rita • Wauconda • Wheaton North • Yorkville

Below are each of the weight classes and the ranked wrestlers and Honorable Mentions in each.  Each Illinois ranking is an IllinoisMatmen.com ranking, and each Wisconsin ranking is courtesy of WIwrestle.

106 (R: 11 • HM: 03)

#02, 3A • Maddux Garbis, Sr. (Plainfield North)

#03, 3A • Niko Odiotti, Fr. (Loyola)

#04, 2A • Erik Klichurov, Fr. (Montini)

#05, 3A • Jackson Soney, Jr. (Normal)

#06, 2A • Ray Long, So. (Niles Notre Dame)

#06, 3A • Austin Phelps, Jr. (Schaumburg)

#07, 2A • Dominic Pasquale, So. (IC Catholic)

#08, 3A • Michael McNamara, Fr. (Edwardsville)

#08, 2A • Jack Bell, So. (Montini)

#09, 2A • Christian Corcoran, Fr. (Providence)

#10, 2A • Trayden Diduch, Fr. (Freeport)

HM, 3A • Kristian DeClereq, So. (Hononegah) • Kaden Potter, So. (St. Charles East) • Vannak Khiev, Fr. (Glenbard North)

Breaking down the weight:

There are a few weights that stand out, and this one, the opening weight, is easily one of those.  There is no other bracket that houses more ranked wrestlers than 106 pounds.  And out of those 11, a minimum of three will not even place at this year’s tournament—two, theoretically, could be eliminated in the blood round with one possibly losing in the consolation quarterfinals.  This one will be exciting.

Now, just taking the eleven ranked wrestlers into consideration, and it does not even consider the impact and possibilities of DeClereq, Potter, and Khiev—all with the ability to not only place, but also upset higher seeds—as well as the remainder of the field with its own outliers, the matchups in this one are going to be heavy in high-level wrestling, emotional, and look for a few coaches to get dinged along the way as they fight for their wrestler looking for every possible point.  The fight for a 106 Dvorak crown starts in the opening round, and it will be a wild ride.

As for how it will start out, well, the seeding of this bracket possibly makes it the most interesting.  If Garbis goes one, and Odiotti goes two, or vice versa, there could be a potential 3A state championship preview for the finals.  Of course, the difference at this weight, between a two and ten ranked wrestler, may be as little as a three-point takedown or a two-point swipe or a stall call or laces that come untied…  In that, the Round of 16 here should be nothing less than some of the best wrestling the state will have to offer in such an early round.

In what is a very young weight, Garbis’ maturity may be the difference.  Or maybe Odiotti’s youth and ability to score from all positions gives him the advantage?  Or maybe Long or Soney or Klichurov will have something to say about who makes the finals?  Either way, as this bracket quickly advances, the matchups alone and throughout will be worth the price of admission.

113 (R: 09 • HM: 00)

#01, 2A • Allen Woo, So. (Montini)

#03, 3A • Caden Correll, Sr. (Normal)

#03, 2A • Jack Hogan, Jr. (St. Rita)

#04, 1A • Austin Hagevold, Jr. (Marian Central)

#07, 2A • Jackson Marlett, So. (Crystal Lake Central)

#07, 1A • Brandon White, Jr. (Dakota)

#08, 3A • Bryson Nuttall, Jr. (Edwardsville)

#09, 3A • Colin Abordo, Jr. (Huntley)

#09, 2A • Lucas Forsythe, Fr. (Providence)

Breaking down the weight:

Woo may be the most technically-sound wrestler in this group, and he has proven that he is very difficult to beat.  But Correll, Hogan, and Hagevold are seasoned, and they know how to battle.  It is difficult to know which will be on the same side of the bracket as Woo, but that matchup will prove to tell either how much better Woo has grown, or if there is someone out there who is looking to create a buzz about his own name.

With nine ranked wrestlers, the lead into the quarterfinals will be something to keep an eye on as matchups come about.  And then, once in the semifinals, look for some great wrestling as the top two should emerge with little debate.

120 (R: 09 • HM: 07)

#01, 3A • Dom Munaretto, Jr. (St. Charles East)

#01, 1A • Brayden Thompson, Sr. (Marian Central)

#02, 3A • Brady Phelps, Sr. (Schaumburg)

#02, 2A • Kannon Judycki, So. (IC Catholic)

#04, 2A • John Sheehy, Sr. (Niles Notre Dame)

#05, 2A • Michael Malizzio, So. (Montini)

#06, 3A • Gavin Pardilla, Jr. (Loyola)

#06, 2A • Jake Lowitzki, Sr. (Prairie Ridge)

#10, 2A • Gavin Rockey, Sr. (Wauconda)

HM, 3A • Jackson Olson, Jr. (Hononegah) • Daniel Lehman, Sr. (Hersey) • Rocco Macellaio, So. (Wheaton North) • Cameron Abordo, Jr. (Huntley) • Colin Ledbetter, So. (Moline)

HM, 2A • Peyton Ramsey, Sr. (Crystal Lake Central) • Bobby Ruscitti, So. (Montini)

Breaking down the weight:

With two number ones, two number twos, and a four-five-six-six, this is another intriguing bracket to follow early on.  All nine of these wrestlers have the potential to make the semifinals; however, only four will emerge for Sunday morning, and then two will advance into the championship match Sunday night.  Again, the seeding in this one will determine the level of excitement as the quarterfinals are wrestled out, and what type of matchups exist.

Munaretto and Thompson are clear favorites to make the finals, but Phelps, Judycki and Sheehy are not easy wins.  Munaretto, who should receive the number one seed, and he is as close to a guaranteed finalist as there is, will have to be sharp throughout if he is looking for a third Dvorak crown in as many years.  Look for these top six to wrestle into the quarterfinals, and then, from there, see how the bracket wrestles itself out.

126 (R: 09 • HM: 09)

#01, 2A • Josh Vazquez, Sr. (Montini)

#02, 2A • Xavier Villalobos, Sr. (Rochelle)

#03, 2A • Tommy Banas, So. (Providence)

#04, 3A • Kalani Khiev, Sr. (Glenbard North)

#05, 2A • Max Cumbee, So. (IC Catholic)

#05, 3A • Rocco Cassioppi, So. (Hononegah)

#06, 3A • Cole Gentsch, Sr. (Normal)

#09, 3A • Luis Flores, Jr. (Conant)

#09, 2A • Mikey Meade, Sr. (Prairie Ridge)

#11, D1 • Aiden Slama, Sr. (Milton, WI)

HM, 3A • Aidan Durell, Jr. (Plainfield North) • Isaac Zimmerman, Jr. (Lockport) • Eric Hoselton, So. (Lincoln-Way Central) • Anthony Orozco-Diaz, Sr. (Hersey) • Levi Wilkinson, Sr. (Edwardsville)

HM, 2A • Isaac Mayora, So. (Montini) • Dylan Ramsey, Jr. (Crystal Lake Central)

HM, 1A • Nicholas Marchese, So. (Marian Central)

Breaking down the weight:

If someone is looking for a bracket to focus his attention on, here it is: 126 pounds.  This is a bracket filled with landmines everywhere, and high-level wrestlers are going to get blown back into the consolations as quickly as they stepped onto the mat, and then they will be eliminated.

This is a high caliber weight—big names are littered all throughout, ranked or mentioned, and all 18 of these guys are used to winning.  However, regardless of what they are used to, at least eight of them will not even make it to the podium, some will not even make it to the blood round.  As exciting as 106 is, 126 may prove to house the tournament’s Most Outstanding Wrestler inside of it.

With Vazquez, Villalobos, and Banas in the same weight, and each being ranked one-two-three in 2A, this bracket could prove to be a preview of the 2A state finals in a few months—and that could happen in the semifinals.  However, before anything is wrestled out in February, there are some big-time 3A names at this weight who have Dvorak titles on their minds.  Depending on where 3A’s Cassioppi, Khiev, and Gentsch, as well as 2A’s Cumbee fall into the bracket, this whole thing could wrestle itself out in a variety of ways.  But never count out the unranked as all are deserving of a medal.

Finally, the possible style matchups at 126 also make for some interesting bouts, and any of these matchups will be worth watching.  Some guys are very offensive, some defensive.  Some like the open shot, some like the control ties.  And all of them can hand-fight!  Some will want to keep the match on their feet, some will want to ride his opponent and look for turns.  And some, well, some work well from every position—and there are more of those than there are not.

If anyone is looking for a weight to invest in, this is it.  It will have high-level matchups, tight matches, great scoring and even better defense, scrambles for days, and final second wins.  Each wrestler who is called to the mat at 126 will be worth finding and following.

132 (R: 05 • HM: 03)

#01, 2A • Deven Casey, Sr. (IC Catholic)

#05, 3A • Liam Zimmerman, Sr. (Lockport)

#05, 2A • Nino Protti, Sr. (St. Rita)

#07, 2A • Jeremy Huf, Jr. (Montini)

#07, D1 • John Sterneis, Jr. (Marshfield, WI)

HM, 3A • Ryan Hanson, Sr. (McHenry) • Elijah Garza, Sr. (Hersey) • Dominick Diaz, Jr. (Moline)

Breaking down the weight:

Casey stands out the most in this weight, and his technique and strength and experience set him aside from the others.  In that, this upper-classman bracket should be a bottom-of-the-bracket fight to wrestle in the finals.  Again, there are no guarantees on where anyone falls in the bracket, but it will take a great deal to upset Casey.

Now, as for guys who can cause problems, look no further than Zimmerman and Protti.  Each will come into the weight with goals of a Dvorak title and, at some point, one or two of them will have to get past someone significant if that is going to happen.

In the wrestlebacks, it will be a fight for third, and this is where Huf, Sterneis, Hanson, Garza, and Diaz will, most likely, battle it out and up their stock.

138 (R: 08 • HM: 01)

#02, 3A • TJ Silva, Sr. (Hononegah)

#02, 2A • Kameron Luif, Jr. (Montini)

#02, 1A • Andrew Alvarado, Sr. (Marian Central)

#05, 3A • Drew Fifield, Jr. (Fremd)

#07, 3A • Tyson Zvonar, Sr. (Lincoln-Way East)

#08, D1 • Devin Bobzien, Sr. (Milton, WI)

#09, 3A • Dominic Recchia, Sr. (Yorkville)

#09, 2A • Jacob Alvarez, Fr. (IC Catholic)

HM, 3A • Ryan Richie, Jr. (Edwardsville)

Breaking down the weight:

This bracket is filled with eight solid ranked wrestlers, and the fact that there are three number two’s and a five, seven, eight, and two nine’s, it makes 138 all the more competitive.

Silva, who defeated Fifield by a technical fall at Barrington, has the upper hand as the possible one seed, and he truly comes across as the most talented wrestler in this bracket.  With Silva most likely wrestling his way into the finals, it will come down to who will oppose him Sunday afternoon.

Fifield, although ranked fifth at the weight in 3A, is a potential problem for others in the bracket.  He knows how to win big matches, has won those matches, and, depending on where Luif and Alvarado are seeded, maybe Fifield gets a chance at redemption.

In the consolations, look for Alvarez, Reechia, Bobzien, and Zvonar to have to knock each other off as they look to move one step higher on the podium.

144 (R: 07 • HM: 05)

#01, 3A • Evan Gosz, Sr. (Fremd)

#02, 3A • Maxsim Mukhamedaliyev, Sr. (Hersey)

#03, 2A • Aiden Arnett, Fr. (IC Catholic)

#05, 1A • Vance Williams, Sr. (Marian Central)

#07, 2A • Enzo Canali, Sr. (St. Rita)

#07, 3A • Blake Mink, Sr. (Edwardsville)

#09, 3A • Kaidreaus, Jr. (Lincoln-Way East)

HM, 3A • Dominic Girardin, Sr. (Belvidere North) • Robert Darling, Jr. (Hononegah)

HM, 2A • Brian Hart, So. (Wauconda) • John Greifelt, Jr. (Niles Notre Dame)  • Joey Pontrelli, So. (IC Catholic)

Breaking down the weight:

Gosz has elevated his wrestling and appears to be near unstoppable in Illinois.  In that, it may be a matchup between Mukhamedaliyev and –a senior versus aa freshman—in the semifinals that determine who faces Gosz in the finals.

At Barrington, Gosz defeated Mukhamedaliyev by a technical fall in the championship match, and Mukhamedaliyev is not only a solid wrestler, he he is also ranked number two in Illinois only to Gosz at the weight.  But, if it is Arnett, can the freshman take out what appears to be one of the state’s finest wrestlers this season?  Again, the seeding will take hold of pole positions and matchups, but the hope is that Mukhamedaliyev and Arnett are opposite of Gosz, and that bottom half of the bracket becomes very competitive and exciting semifinal matchup.

150 (R: 05 • HM: 05)

#01, 3A • Justin Wardlow, Jr. (Lockport)

#02, 2A • Justus Heeg, Fr. (Providence)

#03, 3A • Carson Weber, Sr. (Joliet West)

#07, 3A • Callen Kirchner, Sr. (Schaumburg)

#08, 3A • Aaron Camacho, Jr. (Bolingbrook)

#11, D1 • Gage Gross, Fr. (Milton, WI)

HM, 3A • Rodrigo Arceo, Sr. (Hersey) • Donovan Rosauer, So. (Yorkville) • Brayden Mortell, Sr. (Lincoln-Way East) • Marcus Poe, Sr. (Bolingbrook)

Breaking down the weight:

There is a new number one in the rankings, and his name is Justin Wardlow.  He is certainly in the mix for a title as there is not one person in this bracket that he cannot beat.  He is aggressive and strong and his attacks have led to big points—and he is most dangerous when those points are collected in flurries.  If he can find his groove, he will be a difficult out for any opponent.  Look for any of the top three in this bracket to come away with a title.

Last year Weber shocked the Dvorak world when he cradled up Jayden Colon in overtime and advanced to the Dvorak finals.  And maybe now going from number one in the rankings to number three, it puts that chip back on his shoulder.  Weber is easily a contender for this title, it will now be a matter of how he handles his opening round matches, and if he can create that same semifinal magic from a season ago.

Now, at Barrington, Justus Heeg, one of Providence’s tough new freshmen, took out Weber in the first tiebreaker for a 2-1 decision win and Barrington title.  Can he do it again?  Heeg has proven, even as a freshman, that even against high-level opponents like Weber, he can be patient and wrestle the match that needs to be wrestled to win.  In the Barrington finals, Heeg was poised, controlled, and made the most of each position.  In that same match, Weber appeared to be more anxious and, eventually, frustrated when he could not capitalize on his offense.  The test will be if Heeg can win a second match against a tough opponent like Weber and, for Weber, if he can control the match and come away proving that he is difficult to beat twice.  This matchup could prove to be another good one, and it has semifinal potential.

157 (R: 06 • HM: 07)

#01, 2A • Santino Tenuta, Jr. (Montini)

#02, 3A • Jack Ferguson, Sr. (Yorkville)

#04, 3A • Thomas Fulton, Sr. (Wheaton North)

#05, 3A • Radic Dvorak, So. (Huntley)

#07, 3A • Jalen Byrd, Jr. (Lincoln-Way Central)

#08, 3A • Alex Lizak, Sr. (Lincoln-Way East)

HM, 3A • Luke Grindstaff, Jr. (Plainfield North) • Max Haskins, Sr. (Hononegah) • Rylan Kradle, Sr. (Glenbard North) • Frank Tagoe, Jr. (Hersey) • Carter Mayes, Jr. (Normal) • Killian Rauch, So. (Belleville East)

HM, 2A • Jasper Harper, Fr. (Providence)

Breaking down the weight:

Look at the order of rankings here, there is a one, two, four, five, seven, and eight.  Even though Tenuta and Ferguson have the higher ranking, Fulton and Byrd and Lizak and Dvorak all have enough in the tank to make the finals as well.  Across the board, the six ranked wrestlers in this weight may be the most level as something different in each of their wrestling makes them an issue for the other.

Aside from those six, there are some Honorable Mentions here that make this bracket extremely competitive and one that should have its fair share of great matchups.  Look for guys like Kradle and Tagoe and the others to cause frustration and maybe even steal a match with their stinginess.  This weight has some great parity, and even though there appears to be a pecking order via the rankings, guys like Haskins or Harper are never out of the conversation as placewinners.

165 (R: 07 • HM: 04)

#01, 3A • Anthony Gutierrez, Sr. (St. Charles East)

#01, 1A • Nic Astacio, So. (Marian Central)

#02, 3A • Brody Sendele, So. (Hononegah)

#07, 3A • Terence Willis, Sr. (Belleville East)

#08, 2A • AJ Tack, Jr. (Montini)

#09, 3A • Julian Flores, Jr. (Wheaton North)

#10, 3A • Caden Harvey, Sr. (Lincoln-Way Central)

#11, D1 • Grayden Rode, Sr. (Marshfield, WI)

HM, 3A • Tommy McDermott, Jr. (Bolingbrook) • Steve Strelow, Sr. (Libertyville)

HM, 2A • Nathan Brown, Sr. (IC Catholic)

Breaking down the weight:

Here is aqnother weight with a heavy top—there are two number ones and a number two, seven, eight, nine and ten.  In 3A, the top two state title contenders are present in Gutierrez and Sendele.  This is a matchup any fan should want to see—be it the semifinals or the finals.  Inside of that mix is Marian Central’s Astacio—a top competitor for a final’s appearance as well, and one who has a Dvorak title on his mind.

Additionally, aside from the seven top-ranked wrestlers, the field is fairly deep as it also houses an eleven rank and four Honorable Mention wrestlers.  That makes 11 wrestlers who will be battling it out for a quarterfinal bout in hopes of wrestling into the finals and coming away with a medal.

Finally, look for Willis, Tack, Flores, and Harvey to punch their way through this bracket and break some dreams along the way.  Each could be in the mix odd-numbered medal depending on how well prepared each young man comes into his matches.

175 (R: 07 • HM: 02)

#01, 2A • Brody Kelly, Jr. (IC Catholic)

#02, 3A • Luke Zook, Sr. (Yorkville)

#03, D1 • Owen Griesbach, Sr. (Marshfield, WI)

#04, 3A • Connor Diemel, Sr. (Hononegah)

#05, 3A • Jackson Zaeske, Sr. (Lincoln-Way East)

#06, 3A • Aiden Fischler, Sr. (McHenry)

#09, 3A • Colin Bickett, Sr. (Plainfield South)

HM, 3A • Brendan Landau, Sr. (Edwardsville) • DeAnthony Simpson, Jr. (Moline)

Breaking down the weight:

In another heavy field, 175 offers a great mix of talent that is evenly distributed throughout the bracket as the top six go one-two-three-four-five-six across the board.  Kelly and Cook should draw the highest seeds, but Marshfield, Wisconsin’s, Griesback may find his way to a two or three seed as well.

However this bracket shakes out, there will be some strong matches heading into the quarterfinals, as well as in the consolation semifinals.  Once there, it will be who is wrestling with more of a purpose.  Again, with a consistent blend of talent, this bracket could be wrestled ten times and have ten different results.

190 (R: 09 • HM: 02)

#01, 2A • Cayden Parks, Sr. (Crystal Lake Central)

#01, 1A • Jimmy Mastny, So. (Marian Central)

#01, D1 • Caleb Dennee, Sr. (Marshfield, WI)

#03, 3A • Kurt Smith, Sr. (Hononegah)

#04, 2A • Jaxon Lane, Sr. (Montini)

#06, 3A • Colton Zvonar, So. (Lincoln-Way East)

#06, 2A • Michael Merevick, Sr. (Wauconda)

#07, 3A • Ryder Janeczko, Sr. (Yorkville)

#08, 2A • Isaac Barrientos, Fr. (IC Catholic)

HM, 3A • Julian Holland, Sr. (Glenbard North) • Simon Schulte, Jr. (Edwardsville)

Breaking down the weight:

At 190 pounds, three number one wrestlers will take to the bracket, but which will be graced with the one seed?  Once given the one, there will still be top-ranked wrestlers to deal with, but it may alleviate some of the more troublesome matchups early on, but trouble still exists in those three-four-six-six-seven-eight guys.  There is not hiding in this one.

Now, with Mastny going up in weight, is his middle weight style going to be too much for the traditional uppers in this bracket?  Can seniors Parks or Smith or Lane or Wisconsin’s Dennee slow the sophomore down?  Additionally, this bracket must also take into consideration a tough Zvonar and Merevick and Holland and Barrientos, as this weight is more than the number one ranked wrestlers.

Whichever wrestler wins this bracket, he flat out earned it.  This bracket will be something special come the quarterfinals.

215 (R: 07 • HM: 01)

#03, 3A • Luke Chrisse, Sr. (Yorkville)

#03, 2A • Foley Calcagno, Jr. (IC Catholic)

#04, 3A • Caleb Baczek, Sr. (Libertyville)

#05, 3A • Roman Janek, Jr. (Edwardsville)

#05, 2A • Tommy McNeil, Sr. (Crystal Lake Central)

#07, 3A • Cooper Murray, Jr. (St. Charles East)

#10, 1A • Dan French, Jr. (Marian Central)

HM, 3A • Payton Roberson, Sr. (Lockport)

Breaking down the weight:

In what is another well-balanced bracket, the title here can go a number of ways.  With a nice blend of 1A, 2A, and 3A ranked wrestlers, the title may just come down to who is alleviating mistakes.  These matches should be tight, and being at 215, there is a high probability that conditioning and wrestling through one’s opponent via heavy hands is going to be difference maker.  Look for all these guys to reach the quarterfinals, and then look for each of them to battle as they wrestle to move forward on the championship side of the bracket.

285 (R: 04 • HM: 05)

#01, 3A • Jonathan Rulo, Jr. (Belleville East)

#02, 3A • William Cole, Sr. (Round Lake)

#03, 2A • Scott Cook, Sr. (Niles Notre Dame)

#06, 3A • Owen Jakubczak, Jr. (Fremd)

HM, 3A • Joey Herbert, Sr. (Loyola) • Gage LaDere, Jr. (Lincoln-Way East) • Matt Medina, Jr. (St. Charles East) • Riley Steinkuehler, Sr. (Edwardsville)

HM, 2A • Mike Sisk, So. (IC Catholic)

Breaking down the weight:

A top-heavy bracket for the top three will make for a good semifinal bout on one side of the bracket.  This is not to dismiss any of the other wrestlers, but 285 has a pretty distinct separation from the top to the bottom of the rankings.  In that, is there a spoiler in the mix, an outlier who can keep it close and capitalize in the closing seconds?  In that, this bracket allows for some of the more unknowns to go out and make a name for himself.

There it is.

Session One wrestling will begin on Saturday at 9:30 a.m.  On Saturday, there will be four rounds wrestled, two in each of the first two session, and the night will conclude with championship quarterfinal matchups and the third round of the consolations…and those quarterfinals will be spectacular.
