TEAM ILLINOIS • Here is a look at the unofficial current roster for Team Illinois’ 16U and Junior National Team in Freestyle. Over the past two months, wrestlers have been able to qualify for the National Championships in Fargo, North Dakota, through placing top three in their IL/USAW State Championships, or by placing in a USAW National or Regional Championships.
Overall, the Illinois Freestylers have an unofficial total of 159 National Qualifiers with 53 qualifications still available. Now, this availability is loosey given as there are petitions and returning National champions and All-American considerations. However, for the most part, this is a fair indication of where the state is in the process.
Here is how it works. Each state is allocated four National Team spots. However, if a Freestyle State Placewinner—top three only—places in another National or Regional Championship, then it frees up an additional spot on Team Illinois because now Illinois can use the National or Regional as a qualifier instead of one of its four allocated spots.
The key here, however, is that everyone must keep wrestling in order to free up allocations and keep those same allocations away from opposing states. In the past 25 years, Illinois has been one of the leaders of participation in the National Championships, as well as one of the most successful, due to the concept of qualifying as many wrestlers as possible through as many means available.
Here are the unofficial totals for the men in Freestyle:
16U = 80 National Qualifiers with 33 additional allocations available
JR = 79 National Qualifiers with 20 additional allocations available
In Illinois, IL/USAW automatically qualifies the top three from the State Championships and then uses its final allocation at its “Second Chance” tournament. This year’s “Second Chance” will be hosted by Sycamore High School on Sunday, June 1st.
