DEKALB • In what turned out to be a strong field with returning All-Americans and state champions and medalists, the IL/USA Wrestling Freestyle State Championships was an event filled with Illinois’ best women wrestlers scrapping it out in their pools and in their cross brackets. The goal: becoming an Illinois National Team Member.
The women competed solely on Sunday, and the matchups were intense and competitive as many were not only looking to make the national team, but they were also showcasing their talents for some of the women’s college coaches in attendance.
The top three wrestlers in each weight automatically qualified for the Illinois National Team, but there remains one additional allocation to be determined come “Illinois Second Chance.”
Of course, any Illinois wrestler can make her way onto the national team this month by placing at any one of the National Regional Championships. In these Regionals, placing any weight class provides a wrestler with the option of choosing which weight she wants to wrestle in Fargo at the National Championships.
