Kennedy Blades Battles Back for World Bronze as Illinois Stars Look Toward LA 2028

Olympic silver medalist Kennedy Blades rebounds from a heartbreaking defeat to capture her second consecutive Senior World bronze medal, while rising star Morgan Turner faces a difficult lesson following a controversial disqualification.

ASTANA, Kazakhstan — Champions aren’t defined solely by the matches they win. Sometimes, they’re defined by how they respond when things don’t go their way.

For Illinois native Kennedy Blades, the 2026 Senior World Wrestling Championships provided another opportunity to demonstrate exactly what makes her one of the world’s elite wrestlers.

After suffering a disappointing quarterfinal defeat, Blades battled her way back through the repechage bracket and secured the bronze medal at 68 kg, earning her second consecutive Senior World Championship medal.

The 2024 Olympic silver medalist once again proved that even when gold is no longer within reach, there is still plenty worth fighting for.

Meanwhile, fellow Illinois standout Morgan Turner experienced a much different ending to her first Senior World Championships. The 18-year-old former Lockport star was disqualified following repeated eye pokes against her Russian opponent, bringing a controversial and disappointing conclusion to her tournament.

Two Illinois wrestlers. Two different experiences.

But both leave Kazakhstan with valuable lessons as they continue their journeys toward the ultimate goal: representing the United States at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles and bringing home gold.

Blades Overcomes Defeat to Capture Another World Medal

For Kennedy Blades, expectations have become exceptionally high.

After capturing a silver medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics and bronze at the 2025 Senior World Championships, Blades entered this year’s tournament with her sights firmly set on reaching the top of the podium.

Her tournament began in impressive fashion.

Competing at 68 kg, Blades opened with a dominant first-period pin over Germany’s Laura Koehler.

However, her championship aspirations took a significant hit in the quarterfinals against Kyrgyzstan’s Meerim Zhumanazarova, a former World champion and two-time Olympic medalist.

In a competitive battle, Blades found herself on the wrong end of a pin with just one second remaining in the match.

Just like that, her hopes of capturing a World championship were gone.

But her tournament wasn’t over.

With Zhumanazarova advancing to the finals, Blades received an opportunity to wrestle back through repechage and compete for bronze.

Rather than allowing the disappointment of defeat to define her tournament, Blades responded like a champion.

She dominated India’s Srishti with a 12-1 technical fall, advancing to the bronze-medal match against Mongolia’s Delgermaa Enkhsaikhan.

Once again, Blades faced adversity.

Enkhsaikhan controlled the opening period and carried a 2-0 lead into the break.

But the second period belonged to Blades.

The Illinois native came out aggressively, scoring a four-point takedown and adding exposure points to take control of the match.

She continued attacking, building a commanding advantage before countering an attempted front headlock and putting Enkhsaikhan on her back.

With just 48 seconds remaining, Blades secured the fall and another World Championship bronze medal.

It was a fitting conclusion to a tournament that tested her ability to respond to defeat.

For the second consecutive year, Blades had suffered a setback at the World Championships, only to battle back and earn a place on the podium.

Two consecutive Senior World bronze medals. An Olympic silver medal. And another reminder that Kennedy Blades belongs among the best wrestlers in the world.

At just 22 years old, her international résumé is already remarkable.

But there is still one medal missing.

Gold.

And with the 2028 Olympics less than two years away, Blades has plenty of opportunities to continue developing and closing the gap between herself and the world’s very best.

Morgan Turner Faces Difficult Lesson Following Controversial Disqualification

While Blades celebrated another World medal, fellow Illinois native Morgan Turner experienced one of the most disappointing moments of her young career.

The 18-year-old former Lockport High School standout entered the Senior World Championships at 50 kg as one of the most promising young wrestlers in the United States.

A two-time U17 World champion, Turner had already established herself as one of the country’s most talented young female wrestlers.

Just two weeks earlier, she captured a bronze medal at the U23 World Championships in Las Vegas, defeating Romania’s Ana Rotaru 6-2 in the medal match.

It was another significant accomplishment for a wrestler who is still in the early stages of her international career.

Turner carried that momentum into Kazakhstan and opened her Senior World Championships with a convincing 5-0 victory over Cuba’s Greili Bencosme.

However, her tournament came to an abrupt and controversial end in the round of 16 against Russia’s Elizaveta Smirnova.

During a competitive match in which Turner was attempting to overcome a deficit, officials penalized her following repeated contact with Smirnova’s eyes.

According to United World Wrestling, two eye pokes left Smirnova with a scratched eye. After medical personnel determined that Smirnova could not continue, officials disqualified Turner.

The ruling ended Turner’s tournament and eliminated her from medal contention.

It was a difficult moment for the young American, particularly on the biggest stage of her wrestling career.

There is no question that the incident was serious. Wrestlers have a responsibility to protect their opponents, and maintaining control and discipline is essential, especially at the international level.

But one disappointing moment should not define an athlete’s entire career.

Turner is only 18 years old.

She has already accomplished more internationally than most wrestlers achieve in a lifetime, and her potential remains enormous.

What matters now is how she responds.

The best athletes learn from their mistakes, take responsibility for their actions and use difficult experiences as motivation to improve.

Turner has an opportunity to do exactly that.

Her wrestling ability has never been in question. Her international success, aggressive style and competitive determination have already demonstrated that she possesses the talent to compete with the world’s best.

Now comes another important part of her development: learning the discipline, composure and maturity required to succeed consistently at the senior international level.

If Turner uses this experience to grow, there is every reason to believe she can return as an even better wrestler.

One mistake does not erase two U17 World titles, a U23 World bronze medal or the tremendous future that lies ahead of her.

Her journey is just beginning.

Two Illinois Stars, One Olympic Dream

What makes the careers of Kennedy Blades and Morgan Turner so exciting is that they are both pursuing the same ultimate goal while competing at very different stages of their development.
