Cardinal WC’s Martinez and Makoyed Moving Forward

LAS VEGAS • North Central College’s senior level standouts, Amanda Martinez and Yelena Makoyed, competed at this weekend’s 2022 USMC US Open and, even though neither placed where she would have liked, this is only one step in the process of making the Senior Level Women’s World Team come the end of May.

Martinez, who came in as the number-one seed at 57 kg, opened with a first-round bye before wrestling her first match of the tournament. In that quarterfinal bout against Alisha Narvaez of the McKendree Bearcat WC, Martinez made quick work with scores of 2, 2, 4, 2 for a 10-0 technical superiority in 2:22. The win pushed her into the semifinals against the number-four seeded Adriana Dorado Marin of the Army WCAP.

As the match opened, the first period saw a great deal of defense from each wrestler as the other looked to find ways to score, but it would be Martinez leading at the end of the period with a 1-0 lead due to Dorado Marin not being able to score once she was placed on the activity clock.
