BLOOMINGTON • In a back-and-forth battle between number-one Coal City and number-two Yorkville Christian, every big match that was wrestled and won was matched with an opposing big match that would tighten the dual right back up again. In the end, however, Coal City, who had been the state’s favorite all season, would come away with one more big match than Yorkville Christian, as well as the team title.
The championship dual opened at 126 pounds, and the Coalers would jump out to an early 3-0 lead when Brock Finch started the night off with a 4-0 decision. Noah Dial, however, would answer the call and tie up the dual for the Mustangs with a 4-3 decision of his own.
With the dual tied up, 3-3, it would be Coal City’s turn to strike, and they would bring their pickaxes and hammers, as well as their chisels and shovels, from this point forward to answer the call.
