When Mt. Carmel’s Ryan Boersma took the mat at Marmion Academy for Freestyle State last weekend, he wasn’t looking for anything but a tune-up, a couple of matches to help him get prepared for the upcoming U20 World Team Trials in Las Vegas.
He certainly wasn’t expecting a high-scoring slugfest that would see him pushed to the brink of defeat.
“Honestly, I only decided to compete (at Freestyle state) late last week, ” said Boersma, a two-time State Champion who is ranked eighth nationally at heavyweight by Flowrestling. “I hadn’t wrestled Freestyle since last summer, so I was just looking to go out there and get loose, get some good reps in before World Team Trials.”
