SIUE Battles Nationally-Ranked Opponents

By SIUE Athletics

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – SIUE wrestling dropped a pair of road matches against nationally-ranked opponents Monday.

The Cougars opened the day at Holloway Gymnasium with a 42-3 loss to No. 23 Central Michigan followed by a 31-9 defeat against No. 19 Purdue.

“I don’t think that was a great indication of where our team is at,” said SIUE Head Coach Jeremy Spates. “I do think we are a better team than that, but at the same time we have to go out and show it on the mat.”

Christian Dulaney picked up SIUE’s lone win against Central Michigan. He defeated CMU’s Landon Pelham 8-4 at 197 pounds.

SIUE earned back-to-back victories that nearly changed the momentum of the Purdue match. Tyshawn Williams recorded his first fall of the season at 149 pounds, dispatching Purdue’s Austin Nash in 4 minutes, 12 seconds. Karsten Van Velsor added a 10-5 decision over Cole Wysocki at 157 pounds.

Both Purdue (4-0) and Central Michigan (3-3) entered the match with three wrestlers ranked in the top 20 in their respective weight classes.

“We did not wrestle hard in some matches and made some technical mistakes,” said Spates, whose team dropped to 1-4. “We need to put ourselves in position to win matches and make sure we’re scrapping for seven minutes.”

SIUE next heads to Florida for four dual matches in Deerfield Beach. The Cougars face Binghamton and Michigan State Dec. 29 as well as North Carolina and Kent State Dec. 30.
